Foundations of Hope: How Early Education Changed Our Path – By Latrese Luton
One challenge my family has faced with Early Childhood Education and Care services in our community is access and affordability. While there are quality programs available, the waitlists are often long, and the cost can be a significant burden for working families. As a single mother, I found it especially difficult to find a program that aligned with my work schedule, offered transportation support, and also met my standards for a nurturing, culturally responsive environment.
On the positive side, once we were able to access a Head Start program, the support we received was life changing. The teachers were compassionate, well-trained, and genuinely invested in my child’s growth. Not only did my child thrive socially and academically, but I also received parenting resources and referrals for services that supported our overall well-being. That experience showed me the true value of Early Childhood care—not just as a place for learning, but as a foundation for family stability and community connection.
As a community member and advocate, I’ve worked to support positive change for children and families by actively connecting families to resources, promoting awareness about Early Childhood services, and speaking up for more equitable access to education and care. In my role, I’ve helped parents navigate systems such as child care assistance, behavioral support services, and early intervention programs—especially for those who may feel overwhelmed or unsure of where to start.
Looking ahead, I believe I can do even more by helping bridge the gap between families and providers. This includes organizing informational sessions, partnering with local organizations, and using my voice to advocate for policies that uplift underserved communities.
